Second Lieutenant[15] Rin Kurenai is an Order User that works for the Dazaifu Central Bureau. She is an assassin, set out to kill Eiji Hoshimiya,[4] but later she is dominated under his Order.[16]

Appearance[]

Rin is a young girl with red eyes and long red hair worn as pigtails, tied by flowery pins.

When working as a lieutenant, Rin dresses in a yellow-green military coat along with boots that extend up to her knees. Otherwise, she dresses in her high school uniform, which consists of a skirt overall along with a white sleeve shirt tucked underneath that only reach her elbows. Tied around her collar is a ribbon.

Personality[]

"She is a soldier in the Dazaifu government office. She lost her parents in the Great Destruction. In an attempt to avenge her parents, she relentlessly pursues Eiji Hoshimiya, the cause of the destruction. While she may seem like a typical heroine, she is also a bit clumsy for her age, and is often seen being manipulated by Eiji Hoshimiya."
— Description of Rin's personality on Big Order's official website.

Rin is an audacious and impulsive girl whose primary goal is to seek revenge against Eiji for being the reason behind her parents' deaths.[17] She is willing to resort to any means to kill him, and persistently attempts to through violent procedures such as stabbing Eiji in the hand with her sword.[18] Even after being subjugated under Eiji's Bind Dominator, Rin continues to try to kill him, stating that although she is to obey him, she will never allow him to control her heart.[19] In addition, Rin is relatively ruthless towards others, as shown when she stabs Sena Hoshimiya, Eiji's stepsister, in order to insure that Eiji will do as she wishes.[20] She also harms her comrades, without any consideration for them, so that she can accomplish her own goals.[21] She also doesn't want anyone to kill Eiji. However, despite this, she is a bit jealous as seen when Eiji praises Iyo and hits him.[22]

However, after she truly fell in love with Eiji, she seemed to give up on killing him. As seen in the trip to capture Izumo, she is generally rude around Eiji, calling him stupid etc. because she can't accept her feelings for him.[23] When she and Eiji accidentally kissed while fighting, she had a fit of embarrassment and fainted.[24]

Her personality is a bit different in the Anime After accidentally getting engaged to Eiji, she behaves pervertedly towards him[25] and she is more jealous of Iyo and Sena's love for Eiji. This is seen when Eiji talks to Iyo and chases them with the stone god to make them suffer because he doesn't care about her.[26] Also, when Sena asks her what her real purpose is while in the cell, she doesn't answer. However, when Sena tells her that she can never kill Eiji and that his brother belongs only to her, she gets angry, breaks the handcuffs she is tied to and escapes from the cell.[27] And when she learns the truth with great destruction, she regrets trying to kill Eiji and stabs a stone in her eye for him.[28] And while in the manga she thinks about killing Sena and argues with Eiji about this issue, in the anime she saves her with Eiji and even asks Eiji if he bought a gift for her birthday.[29]

Relationship[]

Eiji Hoshimiya[]

She wants to kill Eiji because he caused the death of her family, but when Eiji takes control of her, she starts to like him, but she constantly goes back and forth about killing him, and she competes with Iyo for him, which makes her a yandere for Eiji.

She and Eiji are lovers at the end of the anime and throughout most of the OVA timelines. But in the manga, Eiji chooses his sister Sena and disappears. When Eiji returns, she expects to take him for herself.

Iyo[]

When Eiji and Rin meet Iyo, Eiji praises her, but Rin feels jealous because Eiji doesn't care about her and Rin competes with Iyo for Eiji, but they occasionally work as a team. In the manga, Rin tells Iyo that she will take Eiji for herself, and the rivalry between them continues.

Sena Hoshimiya[]

At first, she sees Sena as bait, but Rin and she work together to uncover Gennai's plan. They have a sister-like relationship, and Sena says Eiji belongs only to her, which drives Rin crazy. When the truth about Sena is revealed, Rin fights Eiji because she said she would kill Sena in the manga. In the anime, Rin and Eiji fight and save Sena.

Rin seemed unaware of Sena's love for eiji but when she finds out about it, she supports their love even though she gets jealous.

Kagekiyo Tairano[]

At first, Rin is a bit distant towards her. She finds her strange because she's smaller than her and wears different underwear. Later, she reveals her plan to kill Eiji. She tells her that if Eiji doesn't die, a missile will destroy all Yamaguchi and that she will kill Eiji. Rin gets angry at this. She declares that she is the one who will kill Eiji and that she is the enemy of those who interfere with this. At Eiji's command, she attacks her with a katana. After the missiles are destroyed, She acts perversely towards Rin while thinking about Eiji. She asks her if she still wants to kill Eiji and if they are working as a team. Rin scolds her.

History[]

Childhood[]

Kid Rin Kurenai

little rin beats up a boy who is bullying her.

10 years ago, when Rin was a little kid, she didn't act like a girl most of the time,[30] so she would beat up the bullies who made fun of her like a normal girl.[31] Adults also gave her a nickname like "explosive bomb girl"[32], but her father wanted her to act like a girl, so he punched her and told her to "use your fists to protect your loved ones instead of such unnecessary things." Rin loved her family the most, but when her family died in the great destruction, she lost everything, and when she was about to die in the fire, a fairy named Daisy offered her a wish so she could become immortal, so she could kill the person who caused the great destruction and avenge her family. Later, thanks to Group of Ten, she learned that Eiji was the cause of the destruction.

Plot[]

Rin Stuns Eiji

Rin stuns Eiji.

Kurenai Rin enrolls in Eiji's high school, and introduces herself to the class.[33] After school, she approaches Eiji, and requests for his help in calling a locksmith. However when he is unsuspecting of her, she applies a stun gun against his back; rendering him unconscious.[34]

When Eiji awakens in his living room, Rin, having bound his wrists together, announces that she is an assassin that has come for his life.[35]

Rin tells Eiji that there is an assassin sent for his life.

She reveals her knowledge of the fact that he has caused Great Destruction, saying that without the commands from her colleagues above, she would have been unable to get him.[36] While unsheathing her sword, she discloses that her parents have died in a fire due to the Great Destruction. For that reason, she holds a grudge against him.[37]

Sword Penetrates Rin

The sword penetrates Rin.

Rin stabs him in the hand with her sword, and plans to deliver the final blow to avenge her deceased parents. But, the weapon is inexplicably reversed to her, penetrating her stomach. Eiji uses this to his advantage, and escapes.[38]

Rin Holds Sena Captive

Rin holds Sena captive.

At the lobby of the Hoshimiya General Hospital, they reunite. However this time, Rin has managed to hold Sena as a hostage. She prevents Eiji from interrogating her about why she is still alive, stating that the real issue is his unidentified power. She arranges for them to meet at the rooftop, and ensures that he will come by piercing Sena through her front torso with her sword.[39]

At the rooftop, Rin has orchestrated for a helicopter, equipped with a machine gun, to obliterate Eiji.[40] Convinced that he has died, she pities that she ends up not knowing what his Order entails, but finds herself unintentionally healing Sena with her Rebirth Fire.[41] Eiji appears, having cast his Order upon her to coerce her in doing as he bids. She is unable to move her legs, and is soon to learn that she is in his domain.[42]

Rooftop of Hospital

Nonetheless, Rin refuses to submit to him, activating a grenade.[43] While regenerating, she again encounters Eiji, in the parking lot. She sets out to attack him, but is forced to evade the cars that are thrown at her.[44] Careful as to not step in his domain,[45] she quickly notices that Eiji has taken control of her subordinates.[46] Notwithstanding, she plans to blow herself along with him.[46]

But before she can perform as such, Eiji orders for her subordinates to suppress her with their shields, and to disarm her grenade.[47] Soon after, he commands that Rin is not to leave his domain for the rest of her life, and prevents her from harming Sena nor him.[48] Humiliated, Rin cries at having to suffer indignity.[49] Eiji, in an attempt to console her, inadvertently commands that she is to be his partner in life.[50] She, however, concludes that by staying by his side, there will be an opportunity where she can kill him.[51]

Suddenly, Abraham Louis Fran arrives, having captured Sena, and praises Rin as fit for the reconnaissance mission. He invites Rin and Eiji to the Dazaifu Central Bureau.[52]

Eiji and Rin Venture Through Air Vent

Rin and Eiji journey through the air vent.

There, Rin aids Eiji in breaking out of prison.[53] Since separating ways is impossible due to his Order, they travel together to retrieve Sena.[54] Rin deliberately leads him through an air vent to avoid detection as well as to kill him indirectly by a ricochet bullet. But, her plan is unsuccessful when the bullet plunges through her forehead instead. She lies that she has sensed enemies behind them.[55]

Rin's Bullet Penetrates Her Forehead

Ricochet bullet.

Rin purposefully incites him to cross a dangerous pole to the other side, so that he may fall to his demise. However, she ends up falling herself.[56] Eiji tries to persuade her in giving up her goal of assassinating him, but she refuses. She says that it will be a protracted battle due to the circumstances, adding that she will never allow him to control her heart.[57]

Rin Demands to be Released

Rin demands to be released from the holding cell.

They reach a fork, where Rin advises Eiji to give up Sena due to the strong plausibility that Fran might kill him; she only permits herself to erase Eiji's existence.[58] However, he declines,[59] divulging that Sena has only six months to live as a result of her blood disease.[60] Acknowledging his resolution to rescue Sena, Rin informs Eiji of Fran's ability to stop time, and offers her assistance.[61]

Subsequently, they barge in a room with Fran and Sena present. Rin tosses up three grenades to occupy Fran, while Eiji rushes toward him. However, due to their lack of experience in combat, Fran manages to overcome this obstacle. Rin observes as Eiji and Fran engage in a challenge to discern who would succumb first to the pressure and demolish the grenades.[62]

Rin Attempts to Kill Eiji

Rin attempts to kill Eiji

But then, the Group of Ten enters and terminates the battle. To reject her possible interference, Rin is restrained by soldiers.[63][64] Thus, she is forced to watch while seized as Hiiragi Yoshitsune reveals their plan to declare war and appoints Eiji as their ruler. Eiji binds the entire group under his command, and Rin declares that she must kill him.[65]

Rin is incarcerated in a holding cell in an underground division of the Bureau. She demands to be released, when abruptly, by authoritative approval, she is granted freedom from the cell.[66]

Afterward, Rin intrudes into the telecommunication meeting with the prime minister, and attempts to destroy Eiji. Eiji shoots her through the forehead.[67]

Rin Kurenai katana

Rin misunderstands Eiji.

The next day, she joins the Yamaguchi invasion battle with Eiji.[68] and she follows eiji to the kanmonkyo tunnel. At the entrance of the tunnel she misunderstands the reason why eiji is unhappy and asks him why he brought her here is because he wants to be killed by her.[69]

Powers & Abilities[]

Rebirth Fire / The flame of resurrection is the Order that belongs to Rin.[70] Rebirth Fire renders its user fundamentally immortal.[70] It accomplishes this by reviving Rin from seemingly fatal wounds, such as a sword through her stomach[71] or a bullet through her forehead.[72] However, it is able to heal others as well, as indicated when Rin heals Sena's wound on her upper torso.[73] Rin can also repair weapons such as her katana and broken knives[74] also the rebirth fire can melt the ice.[75]

Weapons Rin is quite skilled in using a katana (a Japanese sword), knives, rifles and pistols. Although she uses most of them to kill Eiji, she mostly uses them to defend herself.
